The royal town of Pudukkottai, once the capital city of the Thondamans, has remained educationally backward even several decades after Independece. Concerned about this backwardness, a group of philanthropists with the avowed objective of serving society by providing facilities for value-based education with a vocational bias established the Karpaga Vinayaga Educational Trust under the able guidance of Thim.S. Regupathy. As a maiden initiative, the Trust embarked on the project of establishing a college in the socially, economically and educationally backward district of Pudukkottai by establishing the M. College of Arts and Science in the year 1994. The services of the Trust now extend to 10 colleges located in Pudukkottai and Chengalpet districts serving about 7000 students in almost all disciplines from humanities to medicine at all levels like diploma, degree, post graduation and research programmes.
